The Summer School of the Faculty of Science at uOttawa will take place in Ottawa from August 12 to August 23, 2024. The objective of the Summer School is to bring together advanced undergraduate (3rd and 4th years) and early master students in mathematics, life sciences, physics, computer sciences and chemistry.
Our aim is to expose students to a wide variety of scientific ideas in biology, physics, AI, mathematics and chemistry, highlighting topics that are not traditionally taught in undergraduate programs across Canada. The selected students will have the opportunity to learn new concepts, techniques, and ideas as well as to engage in cutting-edge and interdisciplinary research.
The proposed scientific program is highly interdisciplinary: all courses lie at the interface between two or more disciplines and are taught by a team of professors affiliated to different departments at the Faculty of Science of the University of Ottawa. Special sessions aim to discuss modern challenges and research questions beyond traditional scientific disciplines.
Finally, the summer school attendees will have the chance to meet fellow students from all over Canada. They will be have the opportunity to network with many uOttawa professors and graduate students, discovering more about their research and experience the life of a graduate student.
See Summer School (tentative) Program.
We are looking forward to seeing you in Ottawa in Summer 2024.

The application package must include an academic transcript and, if possible, a letter of recommendation written by a professor. The selection committee will meet in April 2024 and the selected students will be notified via e-mail by the third week of April 2024 at the latest.
Any 3rd or 4rd year undergraduate student as well as master students are warmly encourage to apply. We recognize that despite the diversity of scientific communities and geographic provenance of the researchers that are part of this program, more needs to be done. The Summer School will thus enthusiastically encourages participation from every possible direction in this respect, most notably from groups that are not yet well represented in STEM areas. The selection committee are committed to select students reflecting Canadian diversity.

The uOttawa Summer School will take place in Ottawa August 12 to August 23, 2024. uOttawa is the world's largest English-French bilingual university. Thus, while the official language of the courses is English, every student has the right to use French or English to communicate with the instructor.
The following scientific program is highly interdisciplinary: all courses lie at the interface of two or more disciplines and are led by a team of professors affiliated to different departments from the Faculty of Science of the University of Ottawa.
These are advanced mini-courses with duration of about 10 hours. They may require more engagement and homework than traditional undergraduate courses. For that reason, we encourage the students to register in and complete two (maximum three) mini-courses from the list below.
All mini-courses will take place on the full Summer School period, August 12th-23rd 2024. See Full Program.
The preliminary program includes mini-courses on:
The mini-courses aim to expose students to a wide variety of scientific topics in biology, physics, mathematics, chemistry, artificial intelligence, and scientific computing. One of the main goals is to approach subjects that are not traditionally taught in undergraduate programs across Canada, offering the opportunity to highly-motivated students to learn new concepts, techniques, and ideas and get engaged in interdisciplinary research.
In addition to the mini-courses, the following research talks are sheadule every day at 2:30 pm at STM 201.
August 12 - Structured Quantum Waves (Ebrahim Karimi, CRC and co-Director of NexQT), see details.
August 14 - Nanopores: a transforming technology for genomics and proteomics (Vincent Tabard-Cossa, Physics), see details.
August 15&16 - Practical quantum computing with PennyLane (part I and II) (Daniel Nino and Catalina Albornoz, Xanadu), see details.
August 19 - Fostering an inclusive mindset and infusing a welcoming and supportive atmosphere into the Faculty of Science: sharing different perspectives and experiences in science at uOttawa from academics to research and outreach (Connor Bourgonje, Sue McKee, Agape Williams and Jaclyn Brusso, moderator - Vice Dean of Faculty Affairs & Inclusive Excellence), see details.
